On Thursday, May 2, the UWC will present a faculty workshop on how to plan and teach a W course—in a nutshell. The workshop will cover the process of teaching writing from start to finish—from crafting an engaging prompt to grading fairly and efficiently. This will be an ideal opportunity to learn about teaching writing—not only from workshop leader, Dr. Valerie Balester, but also from colleagues all across campus.
The workshop, to be held in Evans Library 204E will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch provided. Click here to read more and register.
(Register for the W Course Primer workshop below.)
Topics covered will include
- creating assignments that achieve your learning outcomes
- providing writing instruction
- giving formative and summative feedback.
- using rubrics for peer review and grading.
Together we’ll look at sample assignments and discuss how to design tasks that elicit student writing you’ll actually want to read. We’ll also review techniques for preparing students to write, such as finding and discussing models and teaching grammar and punctuation in context. Dr. Candace Schafer, UWC Associate Director, will be demonstrating how to use Turnitin.com as a feedback tool, and UWC consultants will provide a tour of our resources. Finally, we’ll look at sample papers and talk about how to establish grading criteria that align with your course goals.
* Although the workshop will focus on writing and W course issues, the information presented will also apply to oral communication and C course topics.
